The restoration of Abercynafon Farm

Abercynafon Farm Barn - before the restorationAbercynafon Farm dates back to the 1600s and was a working farm until the 1920s when the buildings and land were compulsorily purchased by the company building Talybont Reservoir. By the 1960s it had been left to go derelict.

Rhiannon bought the farmhouse, attached stone barn and outbuildings at an auction 25 years ago. She fell in love with it having visited the beautiful spot at the head of Talybont Reservoir – but didn’t realise that it had no electricity or running water! The buildings had trees growing through the walls and none of the buildings had a roof.

It has taken many years of hard (though pleasurable) work to restore and transform, beginning with the farmhouse.

The barn was restored more recently and these days there are plenty of mod cons to keep visitors happy (including WiFi). Nick built an eco-friendly micro-hydro electric scheme to provide for all the property’s electricity needs.

Rhiannon and Nick are happy to share this special place with visitors, many of whom return to Abercynafon Farm Barn year after year.
